What i do, is to turn your house into a home you will love coming back to any day! - CEO Space Designs

A happy home is one where you feel good. It's a home that works. It's a place where people can gather—it's about real life. There's nothing better than being at home with family and friends, and an interior designers’ work encourages just that.

The most frustrating aspect of my job as a designer is people’s misconception about what their job entails.  Most people think they just put fabrics and colors together all day long.  What they don’t know is all of the work that goes on behind the scenes after the vision is created.  That is why KMB set out to speak with a certified interior designer to educate us a bit....

Kemi Mobuse blog: Can we meet you?

Spacedesignsltd: I'm Nkem Odibeli, a graduate of Management information systems from Covenant University, and Interior Designer

Kemi Mobuse blog: What do you do?

Spacedesignsltd: In a nutshell, i design and decorate interior spaces

Kemi Mobuse blog: What inspired you going into this field?

Spacedesignsltd: 1st it was more like fascination... And then that grew into major interest,I've always been a very hands on person and creative.
So all of that put together.

Kemi Mobuse blog: What is the name of your brand and how old is it?

Spacedesignsltd: Space Designs and it's about 3yrs old work- wise.

Kemi Mobuse blog: How has the market reception been since inception?

Spacedesignsltd: It's been baby steps really...From my research, the target market is in 2 categories;
Those who understand and appreciate the work an interior designer does, and those that basically do not see the point.
The 1st category is those that have made me willing to keep going and get better at it

Kemi Mobuse blog: How would you describe your design style?

Spacedesignsltd: Modern, contemporary. I love to work with wallpapers, and what you get with most of my designs, are simple, crisp, clean and clutter- free spaces. Those are some of the characteristics of modern designs
Contemporary is basically whatever's trending at the moment, So I fuse trends into my modern base

Kemi Mobuse blog: Can you remember your first design project? Describe it a bit

Spacedesignsltd: I remember my 1st job. It was for a young guy who just moved into a flat in my friend's house, and having just finished my diploma in interior design, she convinced him I could do up his flat..
I ended up decorating 3 bedrooms. It was majorly a paint job, and I made curtains and beddings. Each room had a different color scheme, and my client was very impressed

Kemi Mobuse blog: Who or what inspires you?

Spacedesignsltd: There are a lot of "senior" designers (for lack of a better word) here in Nigeria doing amazing world standard jobs that I look up to. I follow quite a number and learn from them, while tapping into my inner creativity.
And then there's Omon of Blue Mahogany Interiors..
She basically gave me a 1st hand insight into what the field entailed, and even though it was for a short period and we didn't get on very fine, I genuinely admire her work and her style

Kemi Mobuse blog: What is the most frustrating aspect of being a designer and the most rewarding?

Spacedesignsltd: Most frustrating is definitely the workers/ artisans
Being able to successfully translate a client's brief and seeing the satisfaction they derive from a job well done, is absolutely rewarding

Kemi Mobuse blog: What is a typical day in your work like?

Spacedesignsltd: Honestly, there’s no typical day. Lol. It depends on the project at hand..
Sometimes, I’m probably just making curtains for a client, so all the back end fabric selection and sewing is done, then we go to the site to install.
Other times, it's a more robust project and it's takes weeks for several aspects to come to live before we can put everything together on site

Kemi Mobuse blog: What motivates you?

Spacedesignsltd: Ermm, the need to better at each job than the previous one. And to become a household name.
Ok let's call that my drive. Because really, those desires keep me pushing

Kemi Mobuse blog: Can you describe your most memorable moment in business since inception?

Spacedesignsltd: Most memorable moment would be a job I did at the beginning of this year. There were a lot of top shots vying for the job, and the client was an expatriate company. I definitely wasn't the most qualified by all standards, but he gave me a chance and that meant a lot
Needless to say, they have become a repeat client

Kemi Mobuse blog: Any advice for future entrepreneurs?

Spacedesignsltd: Well, i always say go with your gut feeling. Many times, the only clue we have is what we'd like to do or have a passion: flair for. But that's always enough for starters... Persistence and dedication will help put things in perspective as you go
