I made tons of friends after that, and it was only, after
they have known me, for a long that I finally decided to satisfy their
curiosities about my hearing and what I had in my ears, and guess what? They didn’t
care, simply because, I never gave them a chance to care. I was free, carefree,
funny and playful to name a few.
I was therefore, treated as neutrally as possible.
Tough, there were occasions, when they will say, something and il say the
opposite. I felt embarrassed during those times, but I simply learnt to laugh
at myself and accept my limitations.
Then, something happened! I met a guy, it was actually
on one uneventful day, we had just finished our midday lecture and everyone was
just lazing around in class, when Tope and I chose that very moment to have
an argument, over some money she lent to me. I had actually asked Tope to
come and collect the money on hand, but she refused because I didn’t have
change and she was not in the least bit interested, in going around looking for
change to give me.
Since, none of us, had change, and we were both stubborn, we
started insulting one another back and forth.
At a point, I angrily, strode outside of the class, and
started fuming under my breath, when a guy in over sized clothing
walked up to me, he greeted me and asked if he can sit beside me., I mumbled
a response and ignored him.
He then asked me,
what happened, that was making me look downcast and angry, he further said, he has
been watching Tope and I quarreling, I was surprised at how easy it was for me to air out my grievances about my friend to him. He offered to give
Tope the change, which Tope refused to collect, and started asking the guy
twenty questions instead, typical Tope, lol!
That guy's name is
Adekunle Ibironke , but I call him Adek,
and till the day, I met my husband, and changed besties, lol, he was my bestie and is still my very good friend.
He helped a lot with my hearing issues back then, we even started
sitting together in class, and i dubbed his note very well to my heart content!
Hehe!,. We were so close and do everything together during school hours, that; people
who saw me wearing hearing aids, didn’t pay me as much attention
as they do,
when I’m on my own.
With the added confidence of my friendship with Tope, Jemmy,
Adek and a host of others, I freed myself up and started wearing my hearing
aids visibly.
Although, I had to cope extra hard, more than others in my
studies, because, despite me being able to dub notes, I rarely find it easy to
follow the lecturer’s explanations during a lecture, so I had to make up for
it, by reading more. My friends were
more than happy to explain whatever I may be missing to me, and also partner
with me, during practical classes. They protected me, without being too obvious
about it; as a result, my pre degree days went more smoothly than I anticipated.
It was therefore not much of a surprise, that I was able to
finish my pre degree year with distinctions.
Time to look forward to University
Life, sadly enough, Adek decided to switch school when we got to University,
and I was heartbroken feeling totally naked and alone……
