African Things was started to promote African designs and culture in our everyday lifestyle. Our African culture is rich in tradition, colour and excitement; but because of westernization, young people are rapidly losing touch with Africa, especially in their lifestyles.

Their mission as a brand is to change the negative image associated with Africa; from being poor and backward to being a hub for outstanding designs, creativity and growth. With their African inspired bags such as Oju series, Roy backpack and Sisi backpack, you can feel connected with Africa in a more contemporary way and feel confident to say it is African.

KMB was privileged to interview the Creative Director of this outstanding Brand, where she spoke more on what her brand aims to achieve and the journey so far..find excerpts below...

KMB: Can we meet you? What do you do?

African Things: My name Tosin Lawson, I started African things 3 years ago during NYSC. I am the creative director of African things. I design and manage the production of the products.

KMB: What is African things about exactly?

African Things: African things designs and produces African inspired products. Our goal is to change the negative image associated with Africa and African production. We want to produce and ship internationally
That's the goal.

KMB: How has the market reception been since inception?

African Things: It has not been bad...at first, we really got orders because it was a fad but now, we have been able to distinguish ourselves from the rest and made our mark. People see the quality and love the unique designs we have to offer.
In other words, People no longer just buy our bags because it is Ankara but because, they genuinely like the designs.

KMB: Can you mention some of the things that your brand produces?

African Things: We produce a wide range of produces including backpacks, table mats, plates, gift bags for weddings and corporate events complete with screen printing and all

KMB: What major challenges have you had to deal with inception? How did you cope, more importantly what can you say those challenges have taught you?

African Things: One of our major challenges has been; getting the right producers but what I learnt is; to always have a backup and not to let hard time or disappointments get me down. I just look ahead and find a solution.

I believe that; when you have tried everything and nothing seems to work then, maybe you are not meant to be doing that thing just yet.

KMB: Given a chance to start over, what would you have done differently?

African Things: Honestly, I would not do things differently... I would just have done things faster like set up structure, production, large clients etc

KMB: Which of your products can you say is your favourite?

African Things: I like all my products but, I guess my best is the Oju series range of bags because of the complexity of the design and the feedback I get concerning them.

KMB: What can you say being an entrepreneur has taught you?

African Things: I would say entrepreneurship has taught me to be fearless
And know that; anything is possible

KMB: What do you hope to achieve with your brand say in 5 years?

African Things: In five years, I hope to be recognized internationally.
I hope to have my bags and products in every African household not excluding Africans in Diasporas.

KMB: Any advice for upcoming entrepreneurs?

African Things: For upcoming entrepreneurs I would say keep learning and be adaptable. Don't let negative thoughts bring you down
