"I want to make a difference in Africa's movie industry through special effects production".- Hakeem Onilogbo, CEO Hakeem Effects

By Kemi Mobuse - Wednesday, May 04, 2016

In Africa we have great screenwriters and stories to tell, but these stories do not complete themselves through mere acting alone. Special effects makeup enhances them.

The lack of these effects have always been affecting our screen writers. It limits their writing skills and sometimes make the movies flop. This is one huge difference between global film makers and African film makers.

My brand, Hakeem Effect Concept under the management body of Tricks International, is a brand that is currently changing the face of the African movie industry through creative developments in special effects makeup.

Hakeem at Work
I started my trade 8 years ago with the Yoruba film making genre of Nollywood. Initially, I had wanted to be an actor. I did not have any formal training nor mentors but I invested in my make-up art talents. I realized that I could do replica of anything I see without being taught.  It was quite challenging because no one was ready to accept me and those that did gave me a low pay. Afterwards, I met a Nollywood actor, Ernest obi, who gave me a chance to work on his set. He gave me an opportunity to showcase my work to other Nollywood film makers. Indeed, I have faced a lot of challenges but it is all part of the learning process.

I am 38 years old, a native of Abeokuta, but I live and work in Lagos. I am also currently working on several cinema projects now across Africa. I get calls on a daily basis from countries like Ghana,  Cameroon, Kenya and Tanzania and this makes me glad. The brand slogan: "I am nothing but just a pencil in the hand of my creator" continually gives me a reason to work harder to achieve more progress.

I see Hakeem Effect as brand that has come to bridge the gap between African film making and the global world. The brand serves as a way to meet up to the international standard thus I want  to be known as the first African to bridge that gap. I want to make a difference in Africa's movie industry through special effects production.

My advice to all growing and young makeup artists is that they should put God first in anything they do.
