There are bakers and there are bakers, but some are certainly more special and talented than others, its rare sometimes, to see a baker who can actually be called a designer and aim to create something specially different and unique.
KMB met with the CEO of Bashycakes, excerpts from the interview below:
Kemi Mobuse blog: Can we meet you?
Bashycakes: I am Bashirat BELLO by name, married with
two kids.
I am from Oyo State, Iseyin to be precise.
I own a business which I run, Bashycakes and Confectioneries, based in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

I own a business which I run, Bashycakes and Confectioneries, based in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Kemi Mobuse blog: That means you are a baker
righr? Or is there another term for it?
Bashycakes: Yes, I am a baker as well as a designer.
Kemi Mobuse blog: What inspired your going
into the baking business?
Bashycakes: The passion I have for creativity made me
lean into the business
Kemi Mobuse blog: Is that what you majored in
University?
Bashycakes: Oh, I studied Food Science and technology
for my 1st degree. Then majored in food processing and storage technology in my
2ND degree
Kemi Mobuse blog: What is the name of your
brand and why that choice of name?
Bashycakes: Bashycakes and confectionery. I chose that
because; I wanted it to be from my name, which means 'my work, my pride, my
joy'
Kemi Mobuse blog: How old is your brand and
how has market reception been since inception?
Bashycakes: The business is about 7years old. I started
gradually, being on and off due to other things I was involved in (NYSC,
School, and Motherhood) I resumed back into d business, fully in year
2014
Kemi Mobuse blog: How did you start up,
financial wise? You did it on your own or you had help?
Bashycakes: I had savings during my service year meant
for d growth of the business, and my father also contributed to it, to get few
things.
From then on, any time I got a job to be done, I use the profit made to buy my working tools

Kemi Mobuse blog: What major challenges have
you experienced since inception?
Bashycakes: The major challenge is delivery. People make
orders outside Ogun States (as far as kwara state) and want you to deliver in
person. Though I do delivery myself to any state when the order is a big one,
but when it's minute, d delivery cost is more expensive, so I use commercial
transport in such cases. Some clients are fine with that, while others don't
buy the idea
Kemi Mobuse blog: Is this your sole source of
livelihood?
Bashycakes: I do no other job aside that. Except for a
contract job I am employed for, to train bakers on the use of cassava flour for
confectionery making. But like I said, it's a contract job, it's once in a
while
Kemi Mobuse blog: Can you describe a typical
day in the life of Bashycakes CEO?
Bashycakes: A typical day in d life of BashyCakes
CEO:
I wake up 5 am or earlier, depending on when my 3months old baby boy wakes. Say my prayers; cook so my 2yrs 7months daughter can eat b4 going to school. Prepare her for school. When she leaves, I bath for my little boy, allow him sleep, then I go to bath, eat and prepare for the day’s work.
I resume work 9 am, have a break around 3pm to pick my daughter from school, returns to work by 4pm and close 7pm or 8pm depending on the work load for the day. Reply to any pending message or chats especially from clients, upload new work pictures on my social media pages and goes to sleep between 11pm and 12am.

Kemi Mobuse blog: What has been your most
memorable experience since you started?
Bashycakes: My most memorable experience the week; I was
called to be in Abuja to complete my international passport renewal. That week
I have a wedding cake to bake. I left Abeokuta very early on Wednesday,
thinking I will be in Abuja b4 d close of work, do d capturing process, sleep
over and return to Abeokuta early on Thursday. But it didn't work out as
planned, I didn't finish d process until 11am on Thursday, got to d park, and
left Abuja 12.30pm. The journey wasn't a smooth one, car got faulty on d way,
different stop over. Arrived Abeokuta 10pm. I had to bake that very night to be
able to meet up with the order. Slept around 2am, and woke up very early to
start up with d designing of d cake. To God be d glory, I was able to finish up
late Friday night, and left for Ibadan early Saturday morning where the event
is to take place. It wasn't a funny one
