You may be Hard of Hearing, BUT You are "NOT DEAF"

By Kemi Mobuse - Friday, March 04, 2016

Many people when they come across a hard of hearing person, just decided to label the person "Deaf". No hard of hearing person is Deaf, all you need to do is to face them and speak clearly.

And as a hard of hearing person, the label you use on yourself matters a lot, you are not a disabled person, you are certainly not deaf, you may feel limited, but it doesn't have to define YOU, only YOU can define YOU.

A hard of hearing persons' world is hard enough, with self esteem issue being the most paramount one, inability to speak on phone doesn't help either, watching an unsubtitled film is a tough one, even listening to music is sometimes a No No, crossing the road, requires a lot of extra caution, and on and on the list goes, but remember, there are always little Blessings in all situations, there are times, when you don't want to listen to something or someone,  you simply tune it out, and Bliss! Mummy may be nagging you, and you just switch off your hearing aids, extra Bliss.

Do you know, hard of hearing people enjoy their sleep the most, and wake up chirpy in the morning, because all the loud noises in their surroundings don't disturb them?

Some things to note in terms of labels are:
  • People who are Deaf

People who are Deaf have little or no hearing ability.
  • People with a ProfoHearingring Loss

People with a profound hearing loss usually must use assistive technology in addition to powerful and full-featured hearing aids in order to understand speech.
  • People with a Severe Hearing Loss

People with a severe hearing loss usually can use hearing aids and assistive technology to communicate effectively in most situations. This technology does not provide “normal” hearing for them, but can usually provide sufficient improvement that understanding speech is possible in all but the worst of situations.
  • People with a Moderate Hearing Loss

People with a moderate hearing loss can communicate in many situations even without hearing aids. Even with hearing aids, people with a moderate loss will have difficulty in noisy environments or when they can’t see the person they are speaking with. Certainly, hearing aids could make a huge difference for them in making speech clearer, and many more people are using this technology, now that hearing aids are better able to fit their needs.
  • People with a Mild Hearing Loss

People with a mild hearing loss are least likely to do anything about their hearing. They can understand speech in most situations, but may have difficulty in noisy environments. They may say things like “other people mumble” or “talk too fast”. They may say “Huh?” a lot, but may not see their hearing as a problem serious enough that they would accept hearing aids, even though hearing aids might help them.

The hard of hearing people encompasses the ones suffering from “Mild to profound hearing loss”

So, to someone out there, dealing with this, and its astounding to know the number of people silently going through this, truth is, there are people willing to help, not everyone will taunt you, not everyone will look down on you or shout at you, i know simply because, i have been there, and it always get better.
